Google’s popular photo management utility, Google Photos, which was spun out from Google+ this spring and soon grew to 100 million monthly active users who have uploaded a few 50 billion photos, is today getting even more useful.

The Web giant on Tuesday started rolling out a few handy new features for Android users of its Google Photos service, including a tool created to help you free up a few storage space on your device. Thanks to the little setting that would upload all the photos to the cloud based on the folders you have selected to monitor, it would later delete those folders from your Camera / Gallery folder automatically. Clicking the button will delete any local photos on your phone that have already been backed up to your cloud by the app. Although a similar option was available in the past for people who backed up their photos at full resolution, the feature is now available for anybody to use.

To highlight this feature’s arrival, Google Photos is also introducing a new “Assistant” card. Just tap “Free up space” in Settings, and Google Photos will remove device copies of your backed up photos and videos. In turn, the removal of these images from a user’s iOS device will of course result in space being freed up, leaving room for more iOS applications. The latter option doesn’t count against your Google storage.
