Google releases Duo app for Android and iOS, rivaling Apple’s FaceTime

Rolling out worldwide over the next few days, Duo is already earning a thumbs-up from a number of reviewers who are giving the app points for simplicity and ease of use. This may give Duo an edge since it is being released for Android and iOS, which means you’re not limited to video calling friends that use the same operating system so long as each of you have the app installed. That’s cool, but it’s certainly not the first such service to accomplish that feat.

“Google’s new video calling app, “‘Duo” has been officially launched and is available on both Android and iPhones. With the launch of Duo and Allo, later in the year, questions have ben raised about the usage of the Google Hangouts.

So what makes Duo worth paying attention to?

On the surface, Google Duo is extremely similar to Apple FaceTime: both facilitate one-on-one video calls, both have end-to-end encryption and, arguably, both look kind of the same.

The “Knock Knock” feature allows people to see live video of the caller before they answer.

Beyond that, there’s not much else that really makes Duo stand out from the pack of existing messaging services.

So finally Google has a well built rival to FaceTime and it is not just a gimmick, the app actually seems to be well thought of and executed.

The app adjusts video quality depending on network speeds and can transition from Wi-Fi to cellular connections without disconnecting conversations. The app now not live in India; Play Store however provides a “pre-register” option for India users, indicating that it could be launched sooner. One user can invite another by sending a text from inside the app to download it, otherwise, the plan is to see how well the customers accept the new app. Gizmodo goes on to say that even though the app is new, Google is too late in the market of communication apps.

The new app announced in May is being released Tuesday Aug. 16 2016 as a free service for phones running on Googles Android operating system as well as Apples iPhones
