Google’s self-driving cars will pull over for emergency vehicles
New technology revealed in a USA patent filing.

As PatentYogi discovered, the patented tech would allow a self-driving auto to detect an oncoming emergency vehicle and yield.
Smart vehicles could be about to get a lot more aware thanks to a new breakthrough by Google. The sensors can identify any light that is either red or blue. Further, the one or more computing devices may maneuver a vehicle based on the determination to yield in response to at least one of the one or more flashing light sources and the particular type of the emergency vehicle.
Responding ambulances lose valuable time when drivers don’t pull over for lights and sirens, but a new patent for Google’s self-driving auto may have a solution.
As the United Kingdom law states, drivers are expected to park their vehicle at the next safe opportunity when police signals to stop, which can be in any case.
In case anyone needs reminding, California Vehicle Code 21806 states: “The operator of every street auto shall immediately stop the street auto, clear of any intersection, and remain stopped until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed”. Drivers must not obstruct an ambulance or police auto that may be engaged in a high-speed operation.
