Google’s ‘Who’s Down’ app will help you ‘hang out’ with friends

Google has published a new app for social networking that allow you to see what your friends are doing now.

According to 9to5Google, which first spotted the app, you can let your friends know you are ready to “hang out” with one slider. Who’s Down lets users see when friends are available and indicate that they’re also around to hang out. That makes sense – students tend to have more free time than the rest of us, and they also tend to be on or around campus for large swaths of time.

During sign-up, Who’s Down asks for a Google account login and school name, so it appears Google is heavily targeting the app to students.

Engadget report said, “Once you have confirmed you’re “down”, you can add a status message to say just what you’re “down” for, be it a quiet evening with a few close friends or a booze-fueled night of debauchery that doesn’t end until someone’s in the hospital”. After choosing “down to hang”, the app waits on people who might also be “down to hang”. Even for chat and messaging, users have many options and Google has not been able to make its strong presence in the segment.

In the app, you can toggle a switch that lets your friends know you are available for the next three hours, and it lets you choose from a list of popular activities like “dinner” or “movies”.
