Google to build own smartphone to rival iPhone

Google may release this year its very own smartphone. But I wonder what impact it would have on all the other companies producing Android devices. Currently, every Nexus phone runs on the software designed by Google but the hardware is always associated with an external smartphone manufacturer.

Google already sells its own hardware in the form of the Chromecast, Pixel C tablet, Chromebook Pixel and more. A Google phone would go even further. Apple then works with partners-whether it be retailers, photo sharing services or developers-to accelerate adoption.

That could be about to change though, as The Telegraph reports that Google is in talks with mobile operators about releasing a handset of its own, according to “sources familiar with the discussions”.

The new smartphone will be designed by Google, and the company will not rely on third parties like what it is now doing with the Nexus line of devices.

However, Google has to rely on OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to provide Android updates to their various phones.

On an interesting note, this move could also more or less be Google’s answer to untimely Android updates – other than shaming smartphone makers who are at fault of this, that is.

For long Android users have asked this question, why doesnt Google build its own smartphone to take on Apple’s iPhone instead of relying on Huawei and LG to take on Apple.

It’s not yet known how this might impact the way they work with the Nexus brand, which was pretty much created to show off the latest version of Android as soon as it launches. By the end of the year, Google will also launch a smart speaker under the Google Home brand.

Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is being rumored to be in the process of planning a new line of smartphones that will be purely produced by Google.

Google is a massive player in the Internet software market, if not the best, but they have been trying to make inroads in the hardware division over the years. Well, that should not be the case, at least for now, given that CEO Sundar Pichai recently said that the company’s support for Nexus branded smartphones will continue.
