Google Translate app instant visual translation adds 20 languages

Google announced they have expanded the instant visual translation feature within the Google Translate app to now support 20 new languages, bringing the total to 27 languages supported. You’ll see the text transform live on your screen into the other language. Just open the app, click on the camera, and point it at the text you need to translate-a street sign, ingredient list, instruction manual, dials on a washing machine.

The update includes improved real-time voice translations while one-way translations are now available from English to Hindi and Thai. So no matter where you are or which country you’re visiting, you’ll always have a quick, mostly-reliable language translator, which now works in 27 different languages. The app finds the letters and icons in the picture and uses a convolutional neural network to recognize what the letter is. The best part about this functionality too is that Google makes it so translations happen without having to be connected to the internet, so you can still see things happen in front of your eyes even when there’s no network connection around.

Along with adding more languages to the app, Google Translate has also made improvements to its voice conversation mode so it will work faster and more naturally – even on slow mobile networks. With these 25 supported languages, users can do two-way instant visual translations. To test it out, they translated the classic Mexican folk song “La Bamba” and the results are pretty magical.
