Google Tries Social Again With ‘Spaces’ Group-Sharing App

I’ve been jumping around in the app for a few minutes now and am not sure that I, personally, have much use for it. These types of group sharing like apps are probably great within bigger organizations or fraternities or something, not a 2-man shop like DL. Google recommends attendees that they should have Spaces installed on their devices before they arrive.

Google’s Circle concept never quite took off but the company is trying its hand at social once more with a new app called Spaces. If equipment is in the photo, it would make sense for Google to make this its developer gift so that software/applications/experiences can be prepared for a more extensive release sometime not long from now (as FT appears to suggest). Google’s latest iOS app update brings the same functionality to Apple’s side of the fence. But the major difference is that other chat apps require you to keep jumping between other apps, opening links, viewing videos over third-party apps etc, while Spaces comes with everything at one place. In Google’s words: “With Spaces, it’s simple to find and share articles, videos and images without leaving the app, since Google Search, YouTube, and Chrome come built in”.

“We’ll also be experimenting with Spaces this week at Google I/O”, Google Spaces product director Luke Wroblewski said. To invite your friends to a space, you can choose from a variety of different methods including messaging, email, a social network etc. It has already created a space for each session so that developers can interact with Googlers around I/O topics and share content.

iOS users have generally been on the fringes of the VR revolution so far with Google favouring the Android platform.

If you follow Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) official blog to the point of compulsion, now and again you do find nuggets of gold. Spaces is rolling out today, but you can’t download it right now.
