Google updates Android version of Google Maps app
Google apps on smartphones now becomes an even stronger competitor to portable navigation devices (PNDs) and in-dash navigation systems.

According to the details shared by Google, the updated version of the Google Maps app for Android enables users to search nearby businesses and also get driving directions – including turn-by-turn voice prompts – even in case of a low-signal or non-existent Internet connection.
“With offline maps, you won’t need to suck down expensive data or have super reliable connectivity every time you want to navigate somewhere”, Bishop said at the conference.
Now you can download an area of the world to your phone, and the next time you find there’s no connectivity-whether it’s a country road or an underground parking garage-Google Maps will continue to work seamlessly.
Google began rolling out offline navigation and search capabilities today for Maps users with Android devices. Offline mapping is also available with a few third-party apps, including Nokia’s Here.
This new offline map technology will work better if you download the appropriate data beforehand, but as a whole, Google Maps should give you more information even when there’s no connection at hand to help you. “So a few users may find using map downloads limits what else they can do with their device – but to be honest that’s one small negative in a sea of positives about this update”. By default, that’s done only when you’re on Wi-Fi. Now, you can do a lot more and it can be very helpful.
That’s it. You have now downloaded a map for Offline use.
Most people agree that Google Maps is great…as long as it’s working. Naturally, Google Maps offline mode will never offer the same functionalities as online, but this update is bringing you much closer to experiencing Google Maps when there’s no access to Internet.

In July, Google Maps also launched a feature called “Your Timeline” that allows users to view information about places they’ve previously visited. It’s not yet available for walking, biking or public transit – so you might still be stuck in subway stations.
