Google, WhatsApp integration lets users back up messages on Android

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.

The new feature allows WhatsApp users to create a private backup of their chat history, voice messages, photos, and videos in Google Drive. Additionally, it offers encryption which users will be able to restore their files with in just a couple of taps.

Drive is the native cloud storage experience for people running Google-flavored Android, so it makes sense for WhatsApp to use it for cloud backup.

When the update does hit, you can decide to backup your data daily, weekly, monthly or not at all.

Users will need a valid Google account but given this is for Android, you should already have one setup.

Using WhatsApp you can only keep in touch with your friends if they also have WhatsApp installed on their iPhones. Not only on their existing phone, but also on a new one too.

While WhatsApp requires regular back-up of chats, Telegram automatically saves all messages so users do not have to bother with old messages when they change phones.

Surprisingly, the announcement was made on the official Google Drive blog. And in Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google has a new auto backup feature that apps can utilize.

The feature is only available on Android and will roll out over the next few months. On the left is a tab called “Manage apps”; find WhatsApp in that list (it’ll only appear once you have the new feature), and click on the “Options” menu to the right of it. Thenyou can select “Delete hidden app data” to delete your backup in Google Drive, and “Disconnect from Drive” to stop future backups.
