Google Working on a New AI-powered Messaging App
The messaging app will reportedly leverage the power of Google’s artificial intelligence technology with new chat-bots users can message like a real person to grab helpful information from around the web.

Google isn’t content to let Facebook dominate the messaging market in the West. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company is working on a platform that will allow consumers to message assistive “chatbots” as well as real-live humans.
While messaging services are among some of the most popular mobile apps, Google’s messaging services Hangouts and Messenger have trailed behind Facebook’s WhatsApp and Messenger, the WSJ report notes.
By incorporating a chatbot into a new messaging app that likely relies heavily on Google search to grab the information being requested, Google also bolsters the number of users essentially accessing their search technology to find information.
Presumably this new app will seek to close the feature gap with rival messaging apps as well as better compete with Facebook M, an AI-based personal assistant within Messenger that Facebook is testing behind closed doors. “Google communications” is the unit that manages products such as Google’s WebRTC (real time communications) work, Hangouts, and the mobile service of the company for Nexus devices, Project Fi. However, software giant Microsoft was missing on the list of the creators of the 10 most used apps this year. Several regionally popular chat apps are also strong players including China’s QQ and WeChat, Japan’s Line, South Korea’s KakaoTalk and also Skype, Viber, and Blackberry Messenger.

It was October when Fox attempted to buy 200 Labs Inc, a startup that builds chatbots, but the firm declined Google’s offer according to people familiar with the matter. “Google Plus is the most recent example”. Users typically join messaging services because they know other users and Google has struggled to create such network effects with both its Hangouts and Messenger services, the WSJ said. Such specialized chatbots could give the new service a depth of expertise that would be a potent reason for users to adopt it.
