GOP Debate: And then there were six

It was a must win for Trump, after his embarrassing performance in the Hawkeye State called into question his frontrunner status and brand as a victor.

If the poll is more-or-less accurate, Trump has lost a small percentage of support, while Cruz and Rubio have picked up approximately 7 points each. He also blasted Hillary Clinton as being “protected by the Democratic Party”. Several candidates embraced the chaos as they felt out the best strategies to survive SC and advance into a grueling March primary schedule, when 58 percent of the party’s delegate total will be at stake. Here’s a look at how New Hampshire did – and didn’t – follow Iowa’s lead.

The soft-spoken Kasich, whose campaign has focused on issues rather than personal attacks, put almost all his resources into doing well in New Hampshire. But Cruz sees it as a necessity.

Although Barbara Bush famously said in 2013 that “we’ve had enough Bushes” in the White House, she has since jokingly backtracked on her remarks and joined her son in New Hampshire.

The first polls in SC in almost three weeks show the New Hampshire primary apparently did little to dramatically shake up the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Neither Iowa nor New Hampshire is really Republican country. He dominated in every demographic and GOP faction: young and old, men and women, rich and poor, very conservative to moderate.

He “won the lottery” on that one, he told a crowd at the Anderson, South Carolina Civic Center.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) is starting to more aggressively attack business mogul and Republican front-runner Donald Trump on the presidential campaign trail. However, after his stumble in Saturday’s primary debate in which he was heavily criticized by rivals for sticking heavily to talking points all the time, Rubio’s popularity with New Hampshire primary voters was damaged and now he also has to fight for survival in the race. Neither of the next two Republicans, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Florida Sen. Bush’s campaign released a radio ad Wednesday in SC featuring his brother, former President George W. Bush. There’s a danger for the caucuses in the future if Kasich creates a path to the nomination that barely touches Iowa.

As they did in New Hampshire, where Kasich finished second, Bush aides have accused Kasich of being weak on defense because of his congressional position on base closures. After faring poorly in both states, Christie ended his campaign.

But by the time the campaign started, Christie’s star had fallen considerably as his image was badly tarnished by scandal and the growing perception that rather than someone who could work with people he was, in fact, more of a bully.

Jim Gilmore, who had only previously participated in undercard debates, did not qualify for the main stage, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Carly Fiorina dropped out of the 2016 race earlier this week.
