GOP introduction for Trump-Pence underwhelms

While Trump likes and respects the IN governor, associates of Trump say he also expressed concern that Pence was not a match temperamentally with his brand and style of campaign.

The campaign was making plans for a splashy Friday announcement aimed at dominating the weekend news cycle heading into the Republican convention.

In thanking Trump for his appointment, Pence described the NY businessman as a “builder”, a “fighter”, and a “patriotic American” who will bring “no-nonsense leadership” to Washington, D.C.

“He looks very good”, added the NY real estate mogul, who is known to comment openly on people’s appearances.

He says he was “honored” to accept the offer to join the ticket, because the country needs “strong Republican leadership” and because presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton can never be president.

But he said that because Trump’s personality is so big and so dominant, Pence just seems irrelevant, and the relationship is lacking the father/son-style bond that united Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan or the chemistry between Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

And in the early months of the war, when it appeared to most to be a military success, Trump agreed with that analysis.

“He is a tremendous man!”

Trump praised Pence two days before the start of the Republican convention in Cleveland. Pence also has been critical of Trump’s proposed temporary ban on foreign Muslims entering the United States, calling the idea “offensive and unconstitutional”.

Donald Trump and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence took the stage together for the first time Saturday morning as the presumptive Republican ticket and the pair pledged to unify conservatives, protect Christians from an increasingly risky tide of prejudice and prevent Hillary Clinton from wreaking havoc on the country.

Pence, who supported Ted Cruz in the in primary, opposed Trump’s ban on Muslim immigration, but has since softened.

Pence added that he supports Trump’s call for building a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico.

In choosing Pence, Trump also appears to be looking past their numerous policy differences.

Pence, however, predicted the party will unify around Trump. “I truly am deeply humbled to be at his side today”.

“Let’s come together as party, as people and as a movement to make America great again”, Pence said.

Their fates will now be decided by the 22-member state Republican committee, which will meet in a closed-door meeting on July 26 to select Pence’s replacement. Trump’s campaign denied he had ever wavered on Pence.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush, who has refused to endorse Trump, tweeted that “Mike Pence is a good man”, and “he will add value to the ticket”.

Democrats mocked the selection, saying Pence’s efforts to block abortion rights and promote the interests of the wealthy will turn off moderate voters.

The circumstances only add to the attention placed on Trump and his politically incorrect and unscripted campaign, which has successfully tapped into a wave of populist anger that few others saw as the race for president began more than a year ago.

Pence put a fearless face on the drama in an interview with Indiana TV station Fox59 on Friday.

Trump had spent weeks vetting vice presidential contenders, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and only zeroed in on Pence in recent days.

“Without the evangelicals, I could not have won this nomination”, Trump said.

Trump’s decision to select Pence was seen as a move to unify the Republican Party, which remains deeply divided in the wake of the NY real estate mogul’s primary victory.

It’s as succinct an encapsulation of Trump’s freewheeling approach to politics as you’re likely to see: In the space of about a minute, Trump misrepresents his own past statements, excuses his ally’s position as a small mistake as unimportant, and eventually insists that his opponent is not entitled to have made the same error.
