GOP kicks off convention with nod to ‘troubling times’

A federal judge in Dayton is allowing an OH college student charged with trying to rush the stage at a Donald Trump rally to stay out of jail, but warns him to stay away from Cleveland during this week’s GOP convention.

The Republican spoke Sunday evening in downtown Cincinnati to the nation’s oldest civil rights organization. In the five years since that tragedy, she has accused Hillary Clinton of lying to her about the events that night and said there is “a special place in hell for people like” Clinton.

Tuesday’s stated theme is “Make America Work Again”.

The evening’s schedule also features survivors of the attack on the USA diplomatic mission in Benghazi as well as immigration activists whose relatives were killed by immigrants living in the United States illegally.

President Barack Obama condemned the violence Sunday from the White House briefing room. They finally found a GOP official who said he would deliver the petitions.

“That’s totally false”, said Corry Bliss, Portman’s campaign manager.

While several big name Republicans opted not to show up for the convention, including George W. Bush, John McCain, and Mitt Romney, the first night’s speakers included an odd variety of TV celebrities such as Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson and Charles in Charge (remember that show?) lead Scott Baio.

OH is one of the biggest prizes in the presidential election and nearly certainly a must-win for Trump. “That includes Christians and Jews and Muslims”, she told the crowd, which greeted her warmly. The businessman has cast aside decades of Republican orthodoxy in his unexpected political rise, creating a crisis within the GOP about its future.

A rough-and-tumble first day of the Republican National Convention ended on a softer note Monday, as Donald Trump’s wife, Melania, offered a loving defense of her husband.

“It would’ve been chaos”, said Ortiz, 65, pointing out Arizona law and state GOP rules mandate that delegates vote their first ballot for Trump.

On Thursday night, the American people get to see what the fuss is all about – and whether Ivanka Trump lives up to the hype (or more accurately, our hype). Democrats called Trump unsafe and reckless on foreign policy, labeling him the “scammer-in-chief” by focusing on his business record and now-defunct Trump University and arguing economic downturn in Atlantic City, N.J., is “an exclusive preview of Trump’s America”. Monday with a moment of silence for police officers who lost their lives in Baton Rouge, La.; Dallas, “and elsewhere”, along the traditional openings (Pledge of Allegiance, National Anthem and an introduction), and a band played a cover of The Turtles’ “Happy Together”.

Monday will also be when Trump’s wife, Melania, addresses the convention – it turns out the nominee-in-waiting will be there to introduce her.

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn – who was briefly vetted as Trump’s potential running mate – is also on the speaking schedule, as are two prominent military veterans serving in Congress: Sen.

Trump has been vague about how he would put the nation on a different course, offering virtually no details of his policy prescriptions despite repeated vows to be tough.

Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, said on NBC’s “Today” show that he thinks very few delegates in the convention hall are anti-Trump.

The reversal by some delegates came after heavy lobbying by the Trump campaign and top officials of the Republican National Committee.

In what has become a bitter internal battle, a group of social conservatives also want to shift party decision-making away from GOP leaders to rank-and-file activists.

Trump’s team insists that by the end of the week, Republicans will plunge into the general election campaign united in their mission to defeat Clinton.

The opponents shouted “Call the roll, call the roll”, as Trump supporters and party loyalists chanted back “USA!”

Even some of those participating in the convention seemed to be avoiding their party’s nominee.

Yet the delegate rebellion is likely to underline how divisive Trump has been. Donald Trump must hope that Day 2 hews a little closer to the script.
