GOP nominates Trump, now standard-bearer for party
My heart is breaking that Sarah Palin is not among the scheduled speakers at the convention, but what the others lack in Palin’s star power they make up for in… something, and this certainly is the first national convention featuring as speakers not one but two fashion models, as well as a C-actor (B would be too good for Scott Baio), a retired soap opera actress and no less than five members of the nominee’s family, but not quarterback Tim Tebow, who prayerfully declined.

At 8:10 p.m., after clearing a question about the Alaska vote, the convention chairman, House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, announced the final vote: Trump, 1,725 votes; Cruz, 475; Kasich, 120; Rubio, 114; Ben Carson, 7; Bush, 3; and Rand Paul, 2. She spoke of her husband’s “simple goodness” and his loyalty and love of family – while noting the “drama” that comes with Trump in politics.
Mr Trump said the result was “historic”. “Everybody knows you can’t fake good children”.
Donald Trump Jr. and Tiffany Trump took the stage Tuesday night and delivered well-regarded remarks, with Tiffany telling a story of how her father encouraged her studies and Donald Jr. talking about growing up alongside his father at job sites and boardrooms.
There was momentary confusion on the floor when the delegations from MI and NY passed on their turn to vote, but the move was meant to allow NY to interject later and be the deciding vote. Tiffany graduated this year from the University of Pennsylvania.
Trump Jr. also claimed that his father “didn’t spend time in executive suites, he hung out with the regular guys on construction sites, pouring sheetrock and hanging – pouring concrete and hanging sheetrock”.
Popkin said Trump’s inability to work with Kasich in OH and his campaign’s failure to proof his wife’s speech presage the “amateur” nature of his campaign.
“When you pull back the curtain, it was just Donald Trump with nothing to offer to the American people”, Clinton said during a speech in Las Vegas. Christie has taken a supporting role as Trump’s sidekick, and his speech at the convention hall on Tuesday seemed aimed directly at what has become his next prized goal: attorney general in a Trump administration. On Monday, Donald Trump Jr.is to be the featured guest at a Houston fundraiser, the first solo appearance at such an event by any of the Trump children.
Sneed also hears Trump is building a new infrastructure around her – a new layer of protection. “I think he will be a tremendous draw”, says Mica Mosbacher, who is raising money for Trump and knows his children personally from the social scene in New York City, where she resides part-time.
But CNN, citing campaign sources, said no one will be fired.
So what Cruz says Wednesday during his prime-time convention speech will be closely watched for clues about his presidential aspirations.
Earlier in the day, party divisions were exposed when delegates opposing Trump demanded a roll call vote to approve convention rules. “She was the most charming, gracious, intelligent, beautiful, polite young lady I had just about ever met”, Reed said.
Melania Trump had said she relied on as little help as possible, but Helminiak suggested a speech writer likely drafted most of her speech.
Mr Trump beat 16 rivals to clinch the party’s nomination in a campaign that has been marked by frequent controversy over his rhetoric on Muslims, Hispanics, illegal immigration and trade.
This week’s four-day convention is Trump’s highest-profile opportunity to convince voters that he’s better suited for the presidency than Clinton, who will be officially nominated at next week’s Democratic gathering. “Can’t argue that the kids are phenomenal”, Rakolta said at the time, “He must be doing something right”.

Trump’s team insists that the party will end the week united in their mission to defeat Clinton. Among the new names: Rakolta.
