GOP Smacked: Simon Carswell’s Republican convention diary

“What I wanted to do last night was lay out the principles I believe we should stand for as Republicans”.

The crowd at Quicken Loans Arena began shouting at Cruz and booing him as he neared the end of his remarks and urged voters to “vote your conscience” rather than endorsing Trump.

Kasich reportedly acknowledged that his absence made things awkward for other state party officials, including Ohio GOP chair Matt Borges. “Only my father will say, I’ll fight for you”, Ivanka Trump said.

In TIME’s Democratic Convention preview issue, Philip Elliott and David Von Drehle explore the hidden side of Hillary Clinton and her struggle to earn the trust of voters and Charlotte Alter writes on what women think of Clinton.

“This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton”, he said.

And on Wednesday, the same delegation that had sat silently throughout speeches supporting Trump cheered on Cruz, who stunned the convention crowd by not even mentioning the nominee in a 20-minute speech.

During their contentious primary battle, Trump re-tweeted a picture negatively comparing Heidi Cruz to his wife Melania, and accused Cruz’s father of associating with Lee Harvey Oswald before the John F. Kennedy assassination.

“There are a lot of people wondering, ‘what am I doing?'” Kasich told the crowd at a meeting of the OH delegation today. Donald Trump accepts Republican presidential nominationTrump painted a picture of a deeply troubled America that is behind both economically and politically and he said only he can fix it. “Well, he doesn’t understand that Americans, we Americans, we are strong, big-hearted, result-oriented, generous people in America”, she said.

“T$3 here was a picture on the front page of the National Enquirer, which does have credibility”, Trump said, falsely contending the magazine is careful not to run false reports because they could be sued.

Trump spoke of America being on the decline (blaming in no small part Hillary Clinton), in a move past Republican nominees would have frowned upon.

“I was amazed that he came to speak here and didn’t endorse the candidate who invited him”.

In his speech, Trump did not repeat comments made to The New York Times that the United States might abandon its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military commitments if he were president.

“Cruz was smug, and it was a slap in the face to Mr. Trump and to the convention”, said Trump delegate Mark Fratella, a teacher from Evanston at the IL delegation breakfast. I don’t see him winning anyway, frankly. “I know nothing about his father”, he added.

The Republican presidential nominee appears to be expanding on his image as a businessman and outsider who can shake up Washington.

Trump’s speech was consistant with the theme of many of his previous speeches, where he painted the current state of the country as bleak, risky and constantly under attack, things only he as president can fix.
