Gophers women get Ohio State to start Big Ten play

The Big Ten announced its 2016-17 women’s basketball conference schedule on Monday.

The Big Ten is returning to a 16-game women’s basketball conference schedule this season after schools played 18 games the past two years.

UW plays nonconference home games against Saint Francis (PA), Dayton, Butler, North Carolina, Idaho State, Mississippi Valley State and Marquette before opening the Big Ten season on New Year’s Day against MI at home.

After the Lions return home, they will face Wisconsin on January 16 and Nebraska on January 19. Penn State’s road games are against Rutgers (Dec. 31), Purdue (Jan. 7), Maryland (Jan. 11), Indiana (Jan. 23), Ohio State (Feb. 1), Northwestern (Feb. 5), Illinois (Feb. 14) and Michigan State (Feb. 22). They host Ohio State on January 26 and finish the regular season at Maryland on February 26.

The schedule flips at the end of January as Purdue hosts Nebraska and Maryland in back-to-back home games, then heads over the border to IL before coming back to Mackey Arena to face MI. The Lions will return home to face Minnesota on February 8 and Purdue on February 11 before traveling to IL on February 14 and Michigan State on February 22. Minnesota, which went 20-12 last season, hosts Harvard in the opener on November 12.
