Gordie Howe: Mr. Hockey honoured in Saskatchewan legislature
He retired from hockey when he was 52.

Hundreds were already there when we arrived; it took hours to reach the front of the line. “I was enamored by him at a young age”.
My first great Christmas present was a Gordie Howe jersey, which I got when I was four. Gordie was larger than life and he was someone who I thought would live forever..
Gordie looked at him with a grin. “I think that’s as great an honour as anybody can have”, Torrey said. “Then I worked on my skating and moved to defense, and kept working and got to be a forward”.
In October of 1989, when I was fortunate enough to break his all-time scoring record, Gordie said after the game that becoming my friend was one of the better things that happened to him in hockey. All day I was reading people’s comments on Facebook about Gordie Howe.
In fact his humility probably cost him serious coin as he was underpaid for most of his career, resulting in those less talented than him to be also underpaid, until the players eventually unionized.
While the Pittsburgh Penguins are still celebrating Sunday night’s Stanley Cup victory, the hockey world is still mourning the loss of “Mr. Hockey”. If “The Great One” says it, it must be true. “My dad said, ‘We were trying to come up with a name and I like Gordie Howe, ‘ so he was Gordie”, Marsha Suftin said. At 46-years old, Howe won the league’s MVP award and the WHA’s championship during his time with the Aeros. I always took that to heart.
“He was everything to me”, Gretzky told NHL.com.
Howe, without a doubt, was most proud of his family. “And it’s an incredible picture, it’s a picture of him going behind the net, picking up the puck, and it’s an old-time picture with the old wooden boards, everybody in the stands dressed to the hilt”. Even at the age of 10, I knew that this was a special moment. This wasn’t one of them.
The answer saddened – and angered – me. “Gordie, he was bigger, stronger, could skate faster and he could shoot the puck with either hand – left or right”.
Rest well, Gordie, reunited with your beloved Colleen and once again skating fearlessly into the corners of an eternal hockey game. Gordie played for the New England Whalers. Gordie was. So they had him booked roughly 280 days a year – at the age of 81 – to make appearances and speeches to pay off the debt.
Kelly, one of the best defensemen of his generation, was teammates with Howe for 13 years before being traded to the Maple Leafs in 1960. Next, they evaluate the United States’ first-place group stage finish in Copa America, Brazil’s elimination from the tournament, and the merits of replay in soccer.
To be honest, he always seemed to be like everyone’s favorite uncle, even to those that never got to meet him. Likely they never knew, for he was a very private man.

MINUS: On my way to the office this afternoon I heard Darren Millard on the Fan 590 struggle to explain the resurgence of Phil Kessel despite having to “downgrade” from Tyler Bozak to Nick Bonino. That’s the attitude we had with each other. “Got a pen?” I had a Sharpie.
