Gordie Howe touched many in Kamloops hockey community
The Gordie is a glorious, memorable rite of passage for any self-respecting hockey player. They represented the best of the Canadian character, and Gordie Howe was their uncontested leader.

He had suffered a significant stroke a couple months earlier which impaired his speech and caused him to lose functionality of the right side of his body.
“You’ve got to love what you’re doing”, Howe once said. At the Hockeytown Café downtown, five young men sat at the bar Friday evening – none old enough to have seen Howe play – watching basketball.
The Hockey Hall of Famer died this morning at the age of 88. While scoring at that pace, Howe racked up 1,685 penalty minutes – more than fellow Hall of Famers Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Marcel Dionne combined. Gordie set the standard for this franchise during the Original Six era, winning four Stanley Cups, capturing numerous awards and setting an abundance of league records.
Some current and former Red Wings also chimed in on the legend’s death.
It was Gare’s first NHL All-Star Game.
Boasting a unique mix of size and skill allowed Howe to play until the age of 52. He came off the plains of Saskatchewan and did it all on the ice year after year, decade after decade. During his years in the WHA with the Houston Aeros from 1973 to 1979, he had the pleasure of playing with his two sons Mark and Marty. Tyutin also scored a goal and two assists that game, while Getzlaf notched one of each.
Funeral plans and visitation for Gordie Howe have been finalized. The image of Howe suiting up for the IHL’s Detroit Vipers in 1997 at the age of 69.
It has often been said that one of life’s most heartbreaking experiences can be to actually meet someone who has been your hero. She shared many Gordie Howe stories, describing his raw farm boy strength, his comeback from a serious head injury and his legendary toughness. Known as Mr. Hockey, Gordie holds NHL records for most games (1,767) and seasons (26).
He dropped the gloves less frequently as he got older, but he never let go of his hard-earned reputation as a guy you don’t mess with. Hockey.’ He was tough, skilled, and consistently earned success at the highest level. “He’s going to be missed dearly”.
Howe left as a teenager to pursue a hockey career. After 18 holes, Howe was having such a good time, he figured he should do another 18.
“And I could feel the blood”, Esposito recalls. “But I don’t think he was dirty”. “It was put into print before I recognized it”. He came out of tiny Floral, Sask., and to no one’s surprise developed quickly into a magnificent National Hockey League player.
Howe surpassed Richards NHL record of 544 goals in 1963.
On Tuesday, the visitation will take place from 9 a.m.to 9 p.m.at the Joe Louis Arena. Gretzky, who wore uniform number “99” as a tribute to Howe, who wore “9”, saluted Howe in honor of his death. He finished his career in 1999 with 894 goals. “I judge myself by the kids”, Howe said. “But I knew when they started scoring 80 goals in a season I was in trouble”. He was with the team for 25 seasons before he retired in 1971.
“I froze my nose and my hands and my feet”, Howe said.
Instead of asking for enforcers to clear space for him on the ice like several current stars, Howe created his own.
“As a human being, he was incredible”, Holland added.

“Gordie raised his eyebrow and didn’t say anything and then went on to say in a very peaceful gentlemanly way, ‘You know we have a fair amount of contact in the sport and it’s a way of letting energy go”.
