Gordon comes out of retirement to replace Earnhardt at Indy

To that end, Earnhardt Jr. has pledged his brain for research upon his death. And, really, this is the only opportunity Gordon would have to be able to drive a race or few in the Cup Series. He is likely going to take time off due to suffering from concussion symptoms for well over a week. Interestingly, Gordon will drive a auto featuring Dale Jr.’s iconic #88, marking the first time Gordon’s ever ran a race in a vehicle not wearing the #24.

Last Race: Matt Kenseth won the New Hampshire 301, giving him back-to-back wins at the speedway. It’s more of an emotional drain because the driver is such a leader of the race team that I think not having them is emotionally draining for the crew because these drivers do a great job getting to know their crews. His recent episode now makes him the central figure in ongoing discussions about concussions in motor racing, which has been secondary story to the problems that have plagued the National Football League. However, after missing what will be at least three races if he is to return following the race at Pocono, time is running out for him to make this year’s Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Hendrick said it has yet to be determined whether Gordon continues to drive for Earnhardt if needed.

What They’re Saying: “We want him for the long haul”.

Gordon is the only driver to have competed in all 22 Brickyard 400s.

A larger question also looms for the sanctioning body. Former driver Fred Lorenzen made the same pledge this week.

Helio Castroneves finished second while native son James Hinchcliffe finish third to match his best finish of the season and best career finish on his home track. After a 3rd-place finish in the final standings a year ago, Jeff called it quits.

At this point, any big news for NASCAR will help boost the ratings, which is exactly what the sport needs.

It’s not clear when Earnhardt first got his injury, though he crashed during races in June (Michigan International Speedway) and earlier this month (Daytona International Speedway).

It would be an easy fit, under the most hard conditions.

On a positive note, Earnhardt said his brain felt sharp aside from his symptoms.

Earnhardt visited the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Medicine Concussion Program Tuesday for further evaluation. He was examined by medical personnel who reported the concussion-like symptoms.

Too many athletes have mortgaged their futures by competing with serious injuries, particularly head injuries.

“Jeff’s a team player”, added Hendrick.

“It’s probably one of the toughest things to do – if I was in that position, it would be very tough for me, I would think”, said Ryan Newman.

While he is happy for Gordon, Waltrip admitted that he feels for Earnhardt and hopes Earnhardt gets well soon.

While no one is happy about seeing Dale Jr. sit out, fans will no doubt be excited for Gordon’s temporary return as he’s a longtime fan favorite.

Tales of drivers racing hurt date back to the beginning of almost every series. “I am going to take this slow and strictly take the advice of my doctors”.

I firmly believe this move is good for NASCAR.

Earnhardt expressed thanks in the podcast for the many people who have offered their support. Many an article proclaimed the same thing when get got out of the vehicle last weekend at New Hampshire.
