Gorgeous photos from SpaceX’s historic rocket launch and landing
Most recently, Musk joined forces with fellow Silicon Valley high-tech entrepreneurs to contribute $1 billion to finance OpenAl, a non-profit artificial intelligence research company.

Johnson estimates Leading Edge has produced 20 to 30 tools for Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX, a 13-year-old company led by billionaire Elon Musk that aims to develop reusable rockets to drive down the costs of space travel.
After that, all future Falcon 9 rockets will be of the upgraded version, whose main goal is to permit SpaceX to recover the first stage even when launching heavy telecommunications satellites into geostationary transfer orbit.
At around 8:40 p.m. EST, the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket returned to the ground to an uproarious crowd, cheering the safe landing after months of unsuccessful attempts.
“It’s a revolutionary moment”, Musk said, according to NBC News, after SpaceX landed its rocket Monday night.
Musk and others have said that making a reusable rocket would reduce costs by a factor of a hundred – thereby making interplanetary travel possible. The first was to deploy the rocket’s payload – 11 ORBCOMM satellites – into low orbit, which company officials said went smoothly.
The launch is a ” giant tech demo for SpaceX, as being able to deliver on claims and come back from losses with not only nominally flight, but also improvement.
Last month, Bezos’s Blue Origin launched a rocket just past the boundary of space, and then landed it vertically in rural West Texas. That effort was thwarted when the fins meant to guide the rocket’s descent stopped working, and it crashed into the drone ship it was meant to land on. Gen. Wayne Monteith, the top commander at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, noted that the returning booster “placed the exclamation mark on 2015”.
SpaceX had tried at least twice before, and now finally succeeded in bringing a section of the 23-story tall Falcon 9 rocket back to the landing pad.
