‘Gotham’ Producers Want to Introduce “Forerunner of Harley Quinn”

The executive producers and numerous cast members were on hand at the TCAs this week to discuss what’s coming on the show in season three, and the EPs dropped the news there that if the show continues, we could see those characters down the line. Since they are “proto” versions, that means that the show will see them in their state before they became the villainous threats they are today, much like what “Gotham” did with The Joker, aka Jerome. “And we’ll be seeing a character – perhaps not this season, but in times to come – who can be a forerunner for Harley Quinn”. “And, to really make the patients that came out of the Indian Hill the precursors of the inspiration for some of the more canonical characters that we see, [such as] Killer Croc, Solomon Grundy so that Indian Hill was the bridge to those villains, in other words”.

Speaking of The Joker, this season will see more of the murderous clown figure. “It’s about developing the myth of the Joker, just like we’re developing the myth of Batman”. Fight me if you want, but she stole absolutely every scene she was in, and we can’t wait for her own spin-off movie (please come soon, please come soon). One of the more recent and major examples is the character of Jerome who was introduced in during the first season before eventually becoming a younger version of The Joker in all but name.

“The cult of the Joker began, and we’ll explore how that deepens and changes this year”.

And if it feels like the show is veering away from its procedural elements more and more as the seasons go on, that’s not an accident.

The announcement is interesting in a couple of ways, the first of which is that it will continue the trend of “Gotham” focusing on the “origins” of the villains that DC fans have come to know and loathe. It’s less and less a police show like it was in season one. Representing Gotham were producers John Stephens and Ken Woodruff along with select cast.

“Transforming Ivy early in the season allowed us to play to a lot of those abilities that Ivy has, while playing the fun of someone trapped in a body that isn’t theirs”.

“In season three you’re really going to see how villains have taken up residence inside the city”, Stephens said.

“Gotham” executive producer John Stevens made the big reveal and teased the two villains’ eventual debut in the series. “We hope to see her return in the second half of the season”. Season 3 premieres on Monday, Sept. 19 at 8PM on FOX.
