The title of highest United States water rates may now actually belong to a different municipality.
Lead levels in the city’s water are “far under” the federal action limit and quality checks are performed every four hours, Brown added.
“Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate responses and cover 75% of the costs for much-needed water, filters, filter cartridges and other items for residents, capped initially at $5 million”.
Flint has become an issue in the presidential primary and Snyder, a Republican, has agreed to testify before congress about his role in the catastrophe. “The home is where a family lives, it’s where you raise kids”.
“I think I’ve been consistent in this message and hopefully that’s resonated”.
The governor, facing pressure from Flint Mayor Karen Weaver and national civil rights leaders for quicker action, said his ultimate goal is to replace the old pipes, but the state-funded study is needed to locate them and prioritize which ones to remove first. “Together, we’re going to get the lead out of Flint, starting next week”. That contamination has led to widespread ill-effects such as rashes and elevated risk of various diseases, as well as hundreds of thousands of Clean Water Act violations… “If lenders cut off lending here we’re in real trouble”. The deal will require approval from Flint officials. He also explained how the re coating of the pipes plays into the overall plan.
Snyder, who declined to say pipe replacement should begin next week, cautions that taking out pipes too quickly could have unintended consequences.
Governor Snyder says the state has approved a grant request from the city.
Even though the city reconnected to the Detroit water system in October, local and state officials have warned pregnant women and young children against using the water unless it has been tested because lead levels continue to exceed what can be handled by a filter.
Flint children soon began turning up with dangerously high levels of lead in their blood, which can cause brain damage.
