Gov. Tom Wolf names Bruce Beemer as successor to Kathleen Kane

She said she loved her job and she’s proud of the work she’s done, but it’s time for her and Pennsylvanians to move forward. “I believed this when she was charged, and today, after conviction, there should be no question that she should resign immediately”, Wolf said.

“I try to live my life without any regrets”, Kane, who was convicted this week of perjury and other crimes, told reporters outside her Scranton office.

The consultant, Josh Morrow, admitted lying to the grand jury to protect Kane after they had concocted a cover story that framed her chief deputy for the leak.

“I have called and voted for Kathleen Kane’s removal months ago because of the serious nature of the charges she was facing, and more importantly because I knew the Office of Attorney General could not operate effectively under the weight of these many distractions”.

Wednesday is Kathleen Kane’s final day as Pennsylvania Attorney General.

Kane is to be sentenced October 28 on two felony counts of perjury and seven misdemeanor charges of abusing the power of her office.

The First Deputy Attorney General, Bruce Castor Jr., will be filling in until a new Attorney General is appointed or elected this fall.

County prosecutors allege they discovered evidence that Kane signed a so-called “secrecy oath” on her second day in office on January 17, 2013, promising her secrecy for statewide investigating grand juries one through 32.

That network, discovered as Kane examined the pace of the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse investigation during the administration of former Attorney General Tom Corbett, was extensive.

“Yes it is, your honor”, Ms. Kane said.

“It’s what I’ve been trying to address since I got here, and that’s restore confidence in the public in the work that the office of the attorney general does”, said Castor, a former Montgomery County commissioner and district attorney.

The two years of turmoil in her office left Kane isolated in Pennsylvania’s political, legal and law enforcement community.

“This is war”, she wrote in a 2014 email to a political strategist. Kane was the victim of her own appetite for power, naivete and lust for vengeance. He entered Kane’s office amid her battles with top aides, spawned, in part, by the unprecedented situation of her law license being suspended by the state Supreme Court. “It seemed that we had somebody who felt that she was above the law, and that’s not the case because no one is above the law”, he said.
