Governor asks MI lawmakers for more aid for Flint

“Gov. Rick Snyder never ordered a state agency to withhold information about lead testing in Flint schools, but instead quickly announced the results of water tests in 13 school buildings at a press conference in the city on October 8”. Never mind that the corrosive river water caused lead to leach from the city’s pipes into the water that every resident uses.

With a small child and one on the way for Clinton, she said the impact hit home in thinking about what she would do if her children were in a similar situation and “that the most vulnerable Americans, our low-income children are going to carry a burden that is not of their making for the rest of their lives”.

Waters said she and other lawmakers plan to visit Flint next month “and I don’t intend to be nice”.

Flint is under a state of emergency until government authorities and independent experts declare the water safe to drink again without filters, which officials have said could happen in the spring.

“They tell us what they need and we load it in their auto – there’s no specific amount that we give them – some people ask for two all the way up to six“, said Perrigan.

The Flint water scandal is a flawless expression of the right-wing mentality of self-entitlement.

On Wednesday, the Governor’s office denied withholding the information. “I know there have been people who have been fired, people who are being held accountable”, Kasich said.

The EPA has acknowledged that state officials notified the agency last April that Flint was not treating the river water with additives to prevent corrosion from pipes.

Flint has since moved back to the Detroit system.

Genesee County on Monday released emails in which county health officials blasted the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Department of Health and Human Services, voicing concerns about delays, incompetence and possible cover-ups of the outbreak.

The state also is launching what it calls a “streamlined system” of assisting residences that test high for lead and copper in their water. They said the data should help determine when and where the corrosion control treatment has been effective.

Brain development, kidney, and neurological function can be impaired by exposure to lead, particularly among young children.

Former Flint Emergency Manager Darnell Earley, who was appointed by Snyder to run the city, was subpoenaed by Congress to appear before lawmakers and testify. “He needs to be gone so we can re-build trust with our government”.

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Al Pscholka, a Stevensville Republican, said he was happy to see a more intermediate- to long-term plan for Flint beyond the “stopgap” measures previously approved unanimously by the GOP-controlled Legislature.

A spokesman for Snyder, who has apologized for his administration’s role in the disaster, says the $25 million for pipe replacement in Flint is a starting point and could grow once a full analysis is done.

Many have been angry with the governor for not spending time with the victims of the crisis.
