The severe weather has killed at least 17 people, destroyed homes, and broken records for rainfall. “We will work with local officials to make sure the needs of our citizens are being met and assess the affected areas for damage”, Alabama EMA Director Art Faulkner said in a press release.
Meanwhile, the emergency manager for Ellis County, about 30 miles south of Dallas, says some homes have been destroyed and others damaged during a fierce storm that spawned tornadoes in the area.
Two people are missing in the floodwaters, he said.
Volunteers are distributing sandbags in the town of Elba, Alabama, as flooding remained a major concern after severe storms battered the state.
Emergency officials issued a voluntary evacuation order for the flood-prone community. Brown said that, according to estimates, more than 100 structures appear to have water damage. Some parts of the region could see as many as 14 inches of snow, with sub-zero wind chills and accumulating ice.
The tornadoes also killed six people in Tennessee and one each in Arkansas and Alabama, bringing the three-state total to 18.
United States post-holiday travelers can expect a mix of stormy weather during the remainder of the weekend, with blizzard conditions in New Mexico and western Texas and flooding rain in the southern plains from south Texas through in, forecasters said.
