Governor faces racketeering suit over Flint water crisis

“We will continue our efforts to ensure an open line of communication continues to be available in both directions between the state and the city as the state works on delivering more than 2 million in state resources that Gov. Snyder has proposed as part of his efforts to solve problems in Flint”, Adler said.

Bankruptcy seems like a cop-out …

While general fund revenue is down slightly over the past two years, the city’s water and sewer fund could face a $35 million deficit.

Elijah Cummings sent Snyder a letter Thursday expressing concern the governor lied under oath when he claimed he is working with officials such as Flint Mayor Karen Weaver, a Democrat.

The congressman added, “You testified that you wanted to learn the lessons of the Flint water crisis caused by your administration….”

Flint has been under a federal state of emergency – following the mayor’s declaration – since January after elevated levels of lead were discovered in the city’s drinking water.

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency said she and other officials are reassessing the agency’s response to the Flint, Mich., water crisis after a top Republican called for her to resign over the scandal.

The lawsuit is being filed today in U.S. District Court. “Well. The citizens of Flint, as shareholders in the corporation of the state of MI, I don’t think they were treated in an appropriate way”. The lawsuits could potentially generate billions of dollars of damages.

The attorneys on Wednesday said they didn’t take filing a Rico lawsuit lightly. “We could’ve filed a lawsuit weeks, and even months ago. That we were going to get everybody what they deserve”.

This year alone, the district has had to deal with teacher sick-outs that closed schools, buildings found to be in violation of city health and safety codes and the threat of running out of money. “The tenor of this entire area has been changed forever as a result of this scheme, and that’s why we worked hard to uncover the scheme”.

Snyder has been criticized for the state’s poor handling of a crisis that garnered national headlines. The attorneys declined to estimate the possible financial damages associated with the lawsuit, but said repayment for water bills alone to Flint residents could exceed $50m.

The plaintiffs are now seeking for compensatory damages for personal, property and business losses that could total a billion dollars, as written by Reuters.
