Govt to focus on special schemes for poor: Modi

In his recent radio address, the Prime Minister made a plea to Indians to use the word “divyang” (born with a divine limb/organ) instead of the term “vikalang” (handicapped) while addressing the differently abled.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said eradication of poverty remains the greatest unfinished business of the 20th century and the most important unfulfilled objective of the United Nations.

“I said this on the very first day that our Government will always be there for the poor and for those who have faced struggles in their lives”, he added.

Modi, while distributing electric rickshaws to a number of people here, talked about a number of schemes of his government like Jandhan Yojana, Mudra Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana and said these all were aimed at transforming the lives of the poor people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a train connecting Varanasi – his parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh – and Delhi.

Dwelling at length on the issue of empowerment of the divyangs, Modi said: “A person who is blind, can obviously not read”.

The prime minister said the 70th anniversary of UNECOSOC should be used to rejuvenate the council, to make it more action oriented, policy relevant and more responsive to the needs and aspirations of our people. PM Modi will flag off this train on his ground visit to Varanasi.

The train, whose fares are 15% higher than normal fares, has improved aesthetic and ergonomics in all its coaches, besides modular panels without visible screws and minimum maintenance hatches inside passenger area for better safety and aesthetics. All the coaches of the model train have been manufactured in a Bhopal coach factory, officials said. He also said this train would soon be replicated elsewhere in the country.
