First graders at St. Bartholomew Academy created “Pinwheels for Peace” in conjunction with the UN’s worldwide Day of Peace.

South Florida joins the rest of the world in honoring World Peace Day, a day meant to put aside all hostilities and strive for a world without war. Numerous pinwheels had a peace sign in the center. The students said since they started making the pinwheels, they’ve noticed quite a change in the way they treat other people.

September 21 is internationally recognized as a day of peace and three local organizations came together to recognize the occasion. “And seeing them realize it’s not just about me, that just touches me when I see that in them”, said Woolmarket Elementary Art Teacher Mandy Smith.

Smith hopes her students realize that even one person, no matter how young, can help spread a positive message.

“I think it’s definitely good that we have project based learning because we get to try something new and the school’s never had it before so it’s a new experience for everybody”, said Sargysan.
