Ballot Access News notes that Monday was the official deadline for candidates to file a withdrawal from South Carolina’s primary election. One of the reasons he got involved in the race, Graham said, was to “turn back the tide of isolationism rising in our party”. He had run “a campaign we can be proud of” that was focused on the nation’s security. Specifically, Graham pointed out that at the first debate, no one supported his belief that more American troops in Syria and Iraq are needed to combat ISIS.

Graham, a three-time senator with strong approval ratings, never got traction in a crowded republican presidential field and was upstaged by Donald Trump, says Donald Aiesi, a political science professor at Furman University.
