The 58th annual Grammy awards are set to take place on February 15, 2016 at the Staples Centre in LA.
For the “Song of the Year” award, we now have double nominations for Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”. The Alabama Shakes also made a huge splash in the music world in 2015 and are nominated for Album of the Year, Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Performance. Maroon 5 is up against Florence and The Machine with ” Ship to Wreck”, Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars with “Uptown Funk”, Taylor Swift featuring Kendrick Lamar with “Bad Blood”, and Wiz Khalifa featuring Charlie Puth with “See You Again”.
Pharrell and West are also nominated for four awards, including album of the year for producing songs on Lamar’s album.
With the nominations just out, it’s no surprise after her busy year that our main gal Taylor Swift is one of the top contenders with seven nominations. It’s the first time a country song is nominated for the top honor since the 2011 Grammys, where nominees included Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” and Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now”, which won the award.
While knee-jerk logic might suggest that Stapleton’s album of the year nom is due to his knockout CMAs set in November, Recording Academy President Neil Portnow – speaking to Billboard not long after the nominees were announced – doesn’t think that rings true. Not only was 1989 the highest-selling album of the year (aside from Adele, not eligible), she recently filmed a Grammys special where she talked about how rough it was to lose album of the year in 2014. That collaboration also earned a nod in the pop sections for best pop duo/group performance.
Barnett will be in great company if she wins the Grammy.
