Grammy nominations, including top album, go to Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift

Canadian rapper The Weeknd also got seven nominations after a break-out year for his album “Beauty Behind the Madness” and best-selling single “Can’t Feel My Face”. Swift earned seven, as did producer-singer the Weeknd.

She enjoyed nods for Album of the Year for her blockbuster “1989” and Record of the Year as well as Song of the Year, which recognizes songwriting, for her hit “Blank Space”. In a twist, Lamar’s contributions to Swift’s “Bad Blood” scored nominations for Best Music Video as well as Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, the Associated Press reported. “He’s someone that’s very serious about his art and about his craft, and has been working it for quite some time”.

Winners will be determined by about 13,000 voting members of the Recording Academy. His Fifty Shades of Grey song “Earned It” -was nominated for best R&B performance, R&B song and song written for visual media.

Garth Brooks, who marked a comeback after 13 years last year, was surprisingly shut out of the country categories.

Lamar’s most recent studio album, “To Pimp a Butterfly”, was released this past March.

Beck took home an award for album of the year for “Morning Phase”.

Nominees for the 58th Grammy Awards will be announced on Monday Dec. 7. Voting for the second round, completed by mail and starting next week, ends on January 15, 2016.

The nominees for Song of the Year are Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Wiz Khalifa, Ed Sheeran, and Little Big Town.

The 28-year-old singer-songwriter from Melbourne will compete in one of the elite Grammy categories, Best New Artist, against Meghan Trainor, Tori Kelly, Sam Hunt and James Bay.

Tame Impala is up for Best Alternative Music Album for Currents, with other nominees including Bjork’s Vulnicra, Alabama Shakes’ Sound & Color, and Wilco’s Star Wars.
