Grammy-Winning Singer Natalie Cole Dies At 65
Cole followed the next year with the album Natalie, further expanding the genres that she could cover with her voice and style on the funky Sophisticated Lady (She’s a Different Lady) (1976 / #25 Pop / #1 R&B) and the jazzy Mr. Meldoy (1976 / #49 Pop / #10 R&B). The album was a phenomenon, its appeal crossing audiences and generations; it collected a bevy of Grammy Awards, including Album, Record and Song of the Year (though the song Unforgettable was at that point four decades old). But she came through her father, and of course was connected to him – met so many great long-standing figures in popular music through him.

In May 1975, she rocketed to the top of the charts with her debut album Inseparable, which featured the breakout single “This Will Be” and earned Cole two Grammy awards, including Best New Artist.
“Her sumptuous, buttery, vocals are the kind of rare treasure that needs only the twinkling of a piano, the snapping of fingers, and the thump-thump-thump of a stand-up bass”.
When Cole was 15, and attending boarding school across the country, her father died of lung cancer.
Cole’s musical curiosity and diversity, and her affection for her dad, would continue to inform her projects. “It takes over your body, and it takes over your soul”, she wrote.
“Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived – with dignity, strength and honour”, her family said in a statement. With Love sold 14 million copies and won six Grammys.
In 2000, Cole released an autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder, which chronicled her abuse of heroin and crack cocaine.
Cole’s 1991 album, “Unforgettable…”
Cole had been sick recently cancelling several tour dates in December, including a New Year’s Eve concert at Disney Hall in Los Angeles and an upcoming February date, due to illness.
But she was happiest touring and performing live. One of the best songs on the album features Cole singing a digital duet with her father to the tune of “Unforgettable”.
“That was really my thank you”, she told People magazine in 2006. “The minister has remarked on the significance of Natalie Cole’s music and indicated that her music speaks, not only to us in history, but also transforms the present and speaks to all times”.
After delving into R&B, soul and pop, Cole achieved her greatest success in 1991 by returning to some of the classics sung by her father. She event underwent chemotherapy and antiviral drug called Ribavirin. “Another father-daughter duet of ‘When I Fall in Love” won the singer a Grammy in 1996 for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.

Cole said at the time that the interferon treatments made recording much more hard, as some of the side effects _ lack of appetite, diminished thirst _ dehydrated and weakened her. “You can go through turbulent times and still have victory in your life”.
