Grand Jury Decides Not To Indict In Sandra Bland Case
“Our actions here today let the judge, and the world know, that the family of Sandra Bland is not alone”. She was discovered dead in her jail cell three days later, hanging from a cell partition with a plastic garbage bag used as a ligature around her neck. Her family has questioned the arresting officer’s actions and have said they don’t believe Bland killed herself.

“After presenting all the evidence as it relates to the death of Sandra Bland, the grand jury did not return an indictment”, Jordan, one of the five appointed prosecutors, said after the grand jury met Monday for about 11 hours. It is expected to meet again in January to consider other indictments.
“This case is not over, and we’re not done”, he said.
“We are unfortunately disappointed by the fact that our suspicions regarding this sham of a process have come to fruition”, he said. The Grand Jury announced there would be no charges on December 21. “We are trying to get this case done as soon as possible”.
“We’re happy to speak with (the family)”, Jordan said Monday.
But Lambert said the family is not “confident” they would be told the truth. “There are other issues that the grand jury is still considering”. Encinia later arrested Bland for battery, for allegedly kicking him.
The family’s lawyers echoed the family’s concerns and said they have little faith in proceedings over evidence that isn’t released to the public. Encinia has been on administrative duty since her death in July.
Bland’s death occurred during the upsurge of the Black Lives Matter movement, inciting conversation about the treatment of black people by police in our country. Bland was pulled over for an illegal lane change, but her encounter with a Texas state trooper quickly grew heated. Questions about the officer began to surface after video of the arrest was released with the officer threatening to “light up” Sandra Bland if she didn’t get out of the vehicle. The case is set to go to trial in January 2017. The stop became contentious, and part of it is caught in footage from Encinia’s dash cam, as well as via a bystander who filmed the arrest.
In addition, the Texas Commission on Jail Standards found that jailers made mistakes when they processed her.
Muhammad is calling for an economic boycott and a federal investigation of Waller County, which was where Bland was arrested in July during a contentious traffic stop. An expert review of jail procedures conducted after three suicides in 2014 highlighted deficiencies in staff training and screening procedures around identifying inmates who may be in need of mental health care. Until the grand jury reaches a decision on Encinia, he remains out of the field, but is still with the Department of Public Safety.
“What happened to Sandra Bland is outrageous”, said Feminist Majority Foundation President Eleanor Smeal.
