Grand slam accentuates reliever Joe Smith’s rough start with Cubs

St. Louis’ Randal Grichuk hit a grand slam to cap a six-run burst in the eighth inning that lifted the Cardinals to an 8-4 win at Chicago on Saturday, ending the Cubs’ 11-game winning streak.

METS 3, PADRES 2: Wilmer Flores drove in the winning run when rookie second baseman Ryan Schimpf made a wild throw to home plate in the 11th inning as NY won at home to stop a four-game slide.

The Chicago Cubs finally have their first loss in August, but they can wrap up another series victory – and pad their National League Central lead – with a win over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. From left to right, Contreras, Szczur and Soler started in the outfield instead.

“He had a bad day, I get it, but I like this kid a lot”, Maddon said.

“I certainly think John Lackey could have helped the St. Louis Cardinals this year”, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. In fact, Wainwright had given up a run and had two men on before he even got an out, but the evidence of Wainwright’s struggles was clear by the time Addison Russell doubled in the second run of the game.

“Just two bad changeups, really, two changeups up (in the strike zone)”, Hendricks said.

St. Louis starter and hyped prospect Luke Weaver allowed two runs on four hits in his major league debut.

San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner snapped a five-start winless rut with seven scoreless innings to steer the Giants to a 6-2 victory over Baltimore. “I was terrible”, said Wainwright, who called the start and the season the worst of his career. Weaver struck out three, walked three and allowed the two runs on four hits over the first four innings.

The slender righty retired the first batter he faced quickly, then walked Stephen Piscotty, gave up a seeing-eye single to Matt Carpenter and walked Brandon Moss to put the go-ahead run at third with just one out.

“You can’t back off in this game”. Last night’s game ended on a bit of a controversial note with the fourth ball that walked in the winning run, and all of that came after the pitch that probably ended Matt Holliday’s season.

PHILLIES 6, ROCKIES 3: Maikel Franco hit a three-run homer, then was in the middle of a testy exchange that led to the benches clearing and a pair of ejections in Philadelphia’s victory over Colorado.

“The Cubs”™ gust of power came early with seven runs off Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright and continued through the game with four home runs off reliever Jerome Williams.

Padres 8, Mets 6: Rookie Ryan Schimpf hit a grand slam and added a two-run shot for San Diego as NY lost its sixth in seven games. Szczur and Baez added two-run shots in the seventh before Gyorko connected in the eighth.

The Grichuk homer continued Smith’s rough start with the Cubs. Weaver took Holliday’s roster spot and was with the Cardinals on Friday following his recall from Triple-A Memphis, where he made his first start last Monday and threw six strong innings. He was a first-round draft pick by the Cardinals in 2014.

The Cubs are 6-6 against St. Louis this season.
