Grand slam helps Orioles defeat Rays at Tropicana Field

Davis gave the Orioles all the offense they’d need, hitting his fifth career grand slam in the third inning. Overall, he held Tampa Bay to one run over 72/3 innings, his deepest start since going eight innings on May 29.

Orioles: RHP Miguel Gonzalez (8-6), who has alternated wins and losses in his past five starts, faces the Rays for the fourth time this season.

Tampa Bay Rays’ Tim Beckham points into the dugout as he runs to first base after hitting a two-run single off Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Darren O’Day during the eighth inning of a baseball game Friday, July 24, 2015, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

As much talk as there was about comebacks, Friday’s win was almost unprecedented on both ends – the Rays had been 1-38 when trailing after seven innings, and Baltimore had been 39-0 when leading after seven.

Evan Longoria singled to put runners on the corners, and O’Day intentionally walked James Loney to load the bases. The key acquisition from Detroit in the three-team trade that sent David Price from Tampa Bay to the Tigers last summer hasn’t pitched since May 5.

1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 left on. The right-hander fanned the first two Rays and extended his streak to 28 consecutive hitters before walking David DeJesus with two outs in the second.

Orioles: RHP Jason Garcia (right shoulder) has allowed three runs, six hits and eight walks and struck out nine over nine innings in his first five minor league rehab games with Double-A Bowie.

Davis hit a 3-2 pitch into the stands in right field for his 22nd homer of the season after J.J.

Orioles: INF-OF Steve Pearce (strained left oblique), placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday retroactive to July 19, had an MRI exam that showed inflammation.

“One run doesn’t do it very often”, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

In the wake of being swept by the Yankees, Showalter tinkered with his batting order. “We’ve been in it for a few time”. The first three were singles. Lefty Wei-Yin Chen takes the mound versus for the 4th time on the season.

Ramirez allowed a two-out double to Adam Jones then settled down to pitch 7 1/3 innings and save the bullpen for this afternoon when they might be needed behind Matt Moore, who hasn’t pitched more than five innings in his four starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. He’s been a revelation since moving into the rotation for good on May 14, however, going 8-2 with a 2.09 ERA, tied for the most wins in the majors during that span.
