Grandmother of Thai Olympian dies watching him lift on TV

The grandmother of Sinphet Kruithong, the bronze medal victor for the 56-kilogram weightlifting category, died while watching her grandson compete at the 2016 Rio Olympics, AP reports. Subin regained consciousness around five minutes later, and was rushed to the hospital.

Nine Thai women have previously won Olympic medals, however Kruithong is the first man. She was taken to Chumphon Buri Hospital in Surin province, 210 miles (330km) away, where she was pronounced dead.

“I cheer him on, fight fight!”.

Enya is reportedly the manager at Rio de Janeiro’s Deodoro Stadium, where Cerullo and her teammates were watching Monday’s Olympic final between Australia and New Zealand.

“I’m not sure if she was too excited, or if maybe she was already ill”, the officer said, per Channel NewsAsia.

Army athlete Sinphet Kruaithong of Thailand claimed bronze medal in the 56kg category of weightlifting at Rio Games on Sunday, August 7 (Brazil time).

Khongthap was expected to be cremated on Wednesday.

During an interview with local press ahead of the competition, Sinphet’s grandmother said she missed her grandson but was overjoyed by his sporting journey. Sopita Tanasan, 22, won a gold medal for weightlifting in the women’s 48-kilogram, or 106-pound, division on Saturday, noted the Post.
