Gratitude and organ donors

April is Donate Life Month in Michigan and Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is encouraging Michiganders to sign up to be on the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. Legacy of Life Hawaii celebrates National Donate Life Month in April with a series of events to honor donor heroes, support donor families, and stand with the almost 121,000 Americans now on the waiting list for an organ transplant.

“We hope that this is a place where donor families can proudly remember the wonderful gift their loved one made as well as a place that people whose lives have been saved by donors can pay tribute to the stranger who helped them”.

She said she’s been paying tribute to her parents by promoting tissue and organ donation. “Especially when you consider that they could be used to help so may other people”, says Richard. Organ donation is relevant because there are always a number of people waiting for an organ transplant than there are suitable donors. Speakers will include Karen Guarino of the Lions Eye Bank in Rochester, who is scheduled to speak about her experience with organ donation. These medical successes will pave the way for as many as 1,000 people a year in the United States to have access to life-saving transplants that would not have been possible before. “These emotions, combined and a lack of experience or knowledge can play a part in your decision to become an organ donor”, according to JustGive, a resource for online charitable giving based in San Francisco. In addition, television and radio ads about organ and tissue donation will air in English and Spanish statewide throughout the month.

The family of donor Keith Buckley, a retired fire officer who died in December, said the memorial was a “fitting tribute”.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs said, “A lot of times, people suffer or lives are lost just because there is not an organ to donate”.

Myth 2: I am too old or too sick to become an organ and tissue donor. Also, donating tissue can make a difference in dozens of lives.

I intend to continue working with Donate Life Virginia and other legislators willing to improve the process of organ donation and expanding the pool of potential donors.
