Gray strikes out Rockies-record 16 in 4-hitter vs Padres

Of all the pitching performances in Rockies’ history, there may not be a better outing than Jon Gray’s start against the Padres. He was told in a postgame interview of the feat.

“So those are the reasons I gave him a little bit of a break”, Weiss said. “I used to play as that dude in video games”. “I was really pumped about it”.

Tom Murphy, meanwhile, homered twice and had five RBIs for the Rockies.

Rockies starter Chad Bettis wasn’t as sharp as he has been recently. The Padres did not put a runner in scoring position. The trio allowed no runs and just one hit with seven strikeouts to deliver the win for Bettis. His four strikeout second-inning is the fourth time a Rockies pitcher has done such since Bruce Ruffin. Wil Myers doubled home two runs in the sixth, and Ryan Schimpf reached on an infield single when he hit a grounder into the Rockies’ shift. “His leg’s fine, so we feel good about starting him and we’re going to proceed with the rotation as we’ve layed out after that”.

The Rockies took control early when Arenado hit a two-run homer that hit the left-field concourse with two outs in the first. The lead ballooned to 8-0 in the fifth when Arenado and Dahl singled and Murphy launched a three-run homer to right-center.

Later, Charlie Blackmon hit an RBI triple in the fourth and Murphy hit a three-run shot in the fifth for his first multihomer game of his career. Every pitch was hit when he missed a spot. His.349 batting average is one point ahead of Washington’s Daniel Murphy for the lead in the NL batting race.

As he neared home plate, Rosales paid tribute to teammate Yangervis Solarte, whose 31-year-old wife, Yuliette, died Saturday of complications from cancer.

Solarte thanked people on Twitter for their support late Saturday night. The tide has turned for San Diego on its road trip, as it has been outscored 16-7 in losing the first two games of the series after registering a three-game sweep in San Francisco.

Jarred Cosart, who missed his last start after suffering a strained right hamstring and groin, which forced him to leave a September 7 outing, will return to the mound for the Padres. “He worked hard to get back from that hamate very quickly and it’s unfortunate he won’t be able to get to the finish line with us”.

Green also said that RHP Tyson Ross (shoulder) is not expected to return this season.

Padres: C Derek Norris didn’t start because of a jammed finger but was available off the bench.

The Rockies defeated the Padres 6-3 in the final game against the two clubs in the 2016 season. The old franchise record of 14 was set by Darryl Kile in Montreal on August 20, 1998.Gray, who gave up four singles, didn’t issue a walk or allow a runner to reach second base as he pitched more than 7 1/3 innings for the first time in his career.
