Great Britain’s Rose edges out Stenson
Andy Murray of Britain became the first tennis player in Olympic history with two singles gold medals, winning his second in a row by wearing down Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in a final that lasted a tad more than 4 hours.

Great Britain’s Justin Rose followed in the footsteps of the long-departed George Lyon of Canada when he climbed onto the podium to collect the Olympic gold medal on Sunday.
“I was just on the outside and barely qualified”, he said after finishing three strokes behind Rose on Sunday.
“Once I got here and experienced the whole vibe I’ve just been really excited and to come out with a medal is great”. He’s seven, he’s just beginning to understand what sport’s all about.
Last week, Leo received a medal at a soccer camp.
“I’ve never been so proud of a third place finish in my life”, Kuchar said. That was very special. It was going to come down to who finished better at the end. I’ve been just so determined, I suppose, to represent Team GB as best as I could. “I didn’t hit a good shot and that opened the door for Justin”.
Rose revealed on Sunday that wasn’t entirely true.”Yeah, I did get [a text] from Rory, absolutely”, Rose told Golf Channel.
The final round was a sellout, and fans lined both sides of the fairway for the conclusion. It’s memories of a lifetime being here competing, and we’re competing for our countries more than we do normally in a way.
It helped that the podium featured three players easily recognized in the world of golf. Stenson said he was coming off a tiring month and hoped he had enough gas in the tank to stay in contention for gold.
Ku char, who only got into the United States team when Jordan Spieth withdrew before the Open and did not know there was no team competition until recently, said: “It’s the happiest I’ve ever been to finish third”. It was Ainslie’s fourth consecutive gold and fifth medal overall, making him the most successful Olympic sailor ever. “I think we’ve justified our place in the Games”.
Then again, maybe the bar was set too low.
“I guess if you would have asked me before the week that I would leave here with a medal, I would have been pretty pleased and I managed to do that”.
Few people play golf in Brazil and the par 71 course was built especially for the Olympics on environmentally sensitive land.
The Rio Games were critical.
Justin Rose has revealed that golf’s successful return to the Olympics even prompted Rory McIlroy to change his mind and watch the thrilling climax in Rio.
Golf included on Olympic roster for first time in 112 years. Next year, one suggestion was to show highlights from Rio.
There ought to be a way of whittling the field down further so that doesn’t happen, and it would also be more in keeping with the structure of other events at the Olympics.

Matt Kuchar said nothing needed to be said “other than what transpired this week”. Two clear of Thomas Pieters through 14 holes, Kuchar pulled away from the chase pack with birdies at 15 and 17.
