Great Britain win Olympic silver in the women’s eight rowing

The British rowers took first place in the men’s eight, while it was a second place finish for the team in the women’s eight.

Scott Durant, Tom Ransley, Andrew Triggs Hodge, Matt Gotrel, Pete Reed, Paul Bennett, Matt Langridge, William Satch and the cox, Phelan Hill, produced an exceptional race at the Lagoa. Canada claimed silver, its second medal in this event after a bronze medal in 2008.

A late surge saw the women just snatch silver from Romania in the exciting final moment.

A physical battle between two undefeated teams ended in favor of Great Britain when they beat the United States 2-1 to clinch the top seed in Pool B.

At the first mark of 500m, Great Britain extended their lead and was 0.64 seconds ahead of Germany in lane three and 0.89 seconds ahead New Zealand who overtook the United States of America who dropped to fourth.

The Americans were first to score, in the third quarter.

The top five were rounded out by Australia with one gold and two silvers and The Netherlands, one medal of all three colours.

Houghton, 35, was the only member of the boat with an Olympic medal in her locker, having taken women’s quad silver in Athens and Beijing. To boot, the Americans finished in last place at the London Games in 2012. Germany the second fastest team went in lane four.

Vladislav Yakovlev of Kazakhstan also capsized in both his repechage and semi-final, but made it safely to the finish line in the F final of the men’s single sculls.
