Snow will continue tonight through Thursday morning and taper during the day Thursday. Hicks is originally from Sanford, Fla., but for the past 60 years she has called the east side of Detroit home.

The Chicago area is on the edge of a massive storm system – about 1,400 miles across – so even a slight shift in the storm can dramatically change what happens around here in terms of snow. It’s led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights in and out of Chicago and the closure of schools in several states.

The Chicago Department of Aviation said about 860 flights were canceled at O’Hare International Airport by Wednesday evening.

More than 310 flights had been canceled at Midway, including all Southwest Airline flights. The city had about half of its 300 snowplows on stand-by to aid the evening rush hour.

Up to 18 inches of snow is forecast for Indiana’s Lake Michigan shores as a winter storm is expected to bring blizzard conditions to the state. State Police said northbound lanes of Interstate 65 in northwestern in were closed temporarily due to jackknifed semitrailers. Two counties in that area issued declarations permitting only emergency vehicles on the roads and warning violators could be ticketed.

On Wednesday, the National Weather Service for Lake Michigan issued a marine storm warning, which warns of winds of 48 to 53 knots.

The warning will be in effect until 10 p.m. If you have health problems or are elderly, you should not shovel this snow.

Genesee County office buildings and Flint City Hall closed at noon Wednesday and will remain closed Thursday.

This snow will be very wet and heavy. They’re also warning that the wet, heavy snow could cause power outages and cause snow-shovelers to hurt their backs, so be careful there. Winds left behind three-foot-high snow drifts on one interstate. Many schools were canceled.

“It’s a good thing we closed”, said Superintendent Tom Fletcher of the Twin Lakes School Corp.in Indiana. Roads are expected to become snow covered, creating hazardous driving conditions and limited visibility.

The State Emergency Operations Center will stay open to manage Flint’s water emergency and to monitor storm conditions. “It’s just kind of cool to look at when you’re running, it’s a nice effect, a nice calming effect actually”, said jogger Kris Powers.
