Great Lakes National Cemetery hosts Memorial Day Observance to honor fallen veterans

In 1868, as commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veteran’s organization, Logan designated the 30th of May as Decoration Day “for the objective of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in nearly every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land”. Each of the 146 crosses had an American flag attached to it, and each was inscribed with the name of an individual from Dougherty or Lee County who has died in military service to the nation dating to World War I.

“It’s about remembering those who died so that other people could think about summer picnics and all the other things people do on Memorial Day”, said U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford, the former S.C. governor.

Boys ranging from fifth graders to seniors in high school helped drill holes next to the graves in the Veterans Honor Ground to place flags.
