Tsipras welcomed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Athens on Monday.

The resolution is nonbinding, and does not constitute a full government recognition of Palestine as a state. He thanked the deputies for a vote he said would “contribute to the creation of a Palestinian state”.

Nine EU members-the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Cyprus and Sweden-have so far recognised Palestine.

“We give new impetus to the resolution of the Palestinian issue”, he added. “A process that will give again hope to the Palestinian people, but also to the Israeli people, for a better future, for a peaceful coexistence of two peoples in the same region”, Mr Tsipras said.

Tsipras stressed that Greece is interested in using its good relations with both sides to play a role in the diplomatic process.

Tsipras declined to say if or when the Greek government would implement the resolution recognizing a Palestinian State.
