Greece Set to Recognize “Palestine”
In his speech before the Greek parliament, Abbas said the Greek government’s step towards recognizing the State of Palestine would be recorded in history.

It should be noted that Palestine has been recognized by the Greek parliament, but not by the Greek state.
“Greece can play the role of a bridge to reach a fair and viable solution to the Palestinian issue”, Tsipras said in statements to the Press following the meeting.
“We give new impetus to the resolution of the Palestinian issue”, he added. But only Sweden did it after its accession to the European Union, in October 2014.
“Instead of Abu Mazen ceasing to incite and fund terror he is following a flawed path that will lead him nowhere”.
Mr Tsipras travelled to Israel last month when he met both Mr Abbas and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He said Abbas’ visit to Greece signals the “strengthening” of traditionally historic ties between the two.
Greece, which enjoys close relations with Israel, has steadily supported the creation of a Palestinian state on the basis of the 1967 borders and with the capital in East Jerusalem.
The others, mainly countries from the former Soviet bloc, recognised Palestine in 1988 when the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) published a Palestinian Declaration of Independence.
Greece’s parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee has unanimously called on the Athens government to recognize Palestinian statehood.
Palestine’s flag was hoisted for the first time at United Nations headquarters in NY on 30 September in a symbolic gesture.

“We feel that we are in our house, the house of Greek democracy, and we thank you very much and, God willing, further steps will follow for strengthening of the relations of the Greek and Palestinian people”, he said.
