Greece Turkey Helicopter Asylum Request

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region-A Turkish Blackhawk military helicopter with eight passengers on board landed in Alexandroupolis, Greece midday on Saturday, Greek officials confirmed.

The soldiers – who reportedly include two majors, four captains and two sergeants first class – have requested political asylum, and Greece has said it will examine their request on Sunday.

The Black Hawk helicopter the soldiers fled in will be returned to Turkey immediately the sources said.

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency quotes the Turkish foreign minister as saying “we have demanded the immediate return of the eight treacherous officers who fled to Greece by helicopter”. Shortly after landing, they were arrested by Greek police for illegal entry into the country.

The attempted coup has resulted in the death of 161 people and the injury of 1440 more.

The worldwide community has shown great concern over a coup attempt in Turkey and urged for the non-employment of violence and a speedy return to civilian rule.
