Abbas has arrived in Athens and will be meeting with Greek president Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, among others.
The Greek government has committed to the recognition of the State of Palestine, extending over the territories that Israel occupied in 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital. However, it is a significant first step.
Greece’s Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras (left) shakes hands with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015.
Nine EU members-the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Malta, Cyprus and Sweden-have so far recognised Palestine.
France followed suit on December 2, 2014, after a majority of French lawmakers approved a non-binding resolution, calling on Paris to recognize the Palestinian state.
“Greece can play this role of a bridge in the direction of a just and viable solution to the Palestine issue”, he said.
Tsipras stressed that Greece is interested in using its good relations with both sides to play a role in the diplomatic process. “It can be done within a year, or perhaps earlier”, Abbas told journalists after the meeting with the Greek prime minister.

The Greek leader appeared to take on the challenge and said that his government would makes some moves in the near future to emphasize its willingness to play a constructive role.
