Green Bay Packers: Notes and Quotes from 1st Week of Training Camp

LB Mike Neal was placed on the physically unable to perform list for a reported abdominal injury. Second round pick Quentin Rollins is starting camp on the non-football injury list. Nelson missed most of the offseason work as he recovered from hip surgery done shortly after last season. Both players can return once medically cleared. All four will need to pass physicals before they can work.

There is a new wrinkle on offense this season with McCarthy giving up play-calling duties to devote more time to overseeing defense and special teams.

His concern following the Thursday morning practice was for wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, who sustained an injury midway through practice when cornerback LaDarius Gunter leaped to make an interception of an Aaron Rodgers pass. The former Badger receiver went down hard on the play and wasn’t able to finish practice.

Nate Palmer received first-team reps at inside linebacker when Clay Matthews moved to the outside. “We’ve got to get him right, got to get him healthy”, McCarthy said.

“Jordy’s so consistent,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said after practice. Last year’s fifth-round draft pick out of Wisconsin missed the 2014 season because of a torn ACL sustained early in training camp. He said Quarless can take as much time as he needs to. “One fan told me he remembered players riding kids’ bikes at Stevens Point, when the Packers trained there from 1954-57″. In keeping with a team tradition, the Packers made the journey from the locker room to the practice field riding the bikes of waiting children, many of whom walked along with the players carrying their helmets, on the first day of training camp.
