The summit, which runs from Sept. 25-27, sees the gathering of over 150 world leaders in the year of 2015 which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
Described by the United Nations secretary-general as “a to-do list for people and planet”, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, are to be implemented over the next 15 years with a big global push to win public and political support.
The United Nations’ general assembly has formally adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes targets to promote sustainability in the private sector and public procurement.
“Promotion of socio-economic progress and prosperity of all countries and people is the core mission of our Organization”, Lavrov said.
In co-chairing the summit, the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni said the new development agenda was designed to leave no one behind.
On the U.S. side, President Barack Obama also committed the United States to the new development goals.
The adoption of the goals is far from a rubber-stamp event, said Amina Mohammed, Assistant Secretary-General and Special Advisor on Post-2015 Development Planning.
The MDGs have proven that goal-setting can lift millions out of poverty. “This document provides a policy framework for the integration of the new goals in our national economic and development planning” he added. “We can help countries strengthen data systems, and sensitize national stakeholders about the new agenda”, she told the meeting which was convened to kick start the effort to take the aims of the new Agenda ‘from conversation to global action’. We cannot solve this problem without achieving a more equal distribution of wealth.
The SDGs, proposed by the Open Working Group, are the result of a three-year-long transparent, participatory process inclusive of all stakeholders and people’s voices.
“Having 169 priorities is the same as having none”.
The new agenda consists of 17 goals designed to end poverty and hunger by 2030.
Implementation, requiring trillions of dollars in investment, will be monitored and reviewed using a set of global indicators to be agreed by March 2016.

“We are setting out together on the path towards sustainable development, devoting ourselves collectively to the pursuit of global development and of “win-win” cooperation which can bring huge gains to all countries and all parts of the world”. The importance of climate change is that every country participates in a way that is based on the solidarity between people and between nations.
