Greinke gives up $71 million, becomes free agent again

A piece from Bill Shaikin in the Los Angeles Times conveyed the news that Zack Greinke has opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in order to become a free agent. The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to be the early front-runners to re-acquire their ace, but it remains to be seen how much Greinke might earn with a few teams reportedly scared off by his age (he turned 32 in October).

The 32-year-old was set to make $71-million over the next three seasons, but should be able to make more, if not double, in the open market.

If Avila can put Greinke and a middle-to-back end of the rotation starter like Doug Fister or Scott Kazmir, Detroit’s rotation will be playoff-worthy once again.

South Korean lefty Ryu Hyun-jin battled shoulder issues in the 2015 preseason and didn’t get to pitch a single inning in the regular season after undergoing a shoulder surgery to fix a torn labrum.

Throughout the 2015 season with the Dodgers, Greinke compiled an impressive 19-3 record to go along with an even more impressive 1.66 ERA and a 5.00 K/BB ratio.

Many have expected him to re-sign with the Dodgers this offseason, but that may very well not end up happening.

With the Dodgers’ notorious spending habits ($310 million in 2015), they are probably looking at spending a good amount on getting Greinke back.

The Dodgers can make Greinke a qualifying offer by Friday at 2 p.m. PT, a one-year, $15.8 million contract offer that, if Greinke declines and later signs elsewhere would net the Dodgers a compensatory 2016 draft pick between the first and second rounds.

Top-ranked North Carolina has lost senior guard Marcus Paige to a broken right hand for three to four weeks…. Chicago could re-sign Ramirez as a free agent or give playing time to Tyler Saladino, a solid fielder with a questionable bat.

Price is 30. Cueto and Zimmermann are 29.

He won the 2009 American League Cy Young Award with the Kansas City Royals before a December 2010 trade to the Milwaukee Brewers. Over his 12-year career, the righty is 142-93 with a 3.35 ERA over 354 games pitched.

Multiple sources have confirmed that Zack Greinke has exercised his opt-out clause with the Dodgers and will test free agency.
