Greinke homers, lowers ERA to 1.58

At age 25, Anthony DeSclafani is the graybeard in the Cincinnati Reds’ all-rookie rotation. Because of his poise and control on the mound, manager Bryan Price holds him up as an example for David Holmberg, Raisel Iglesias, Keyvius Sampson and John Lamb.

Pitcher Zack Greinke #21 of the Los Angeles Dodgers is congratulated by third base coach Lorenzo Bundy #49 after hitting a solo home run against the Cincinnati Reds during the fifth inning at Dodger Stadium August 14, 2015, in Los Angeles, California. “You live and learn, and that’s one of those times I learned that he has a pretty good arm”.

“When he’s on the mound, it never feels like he’s in the middle of a crisis”.

DeSclafani (7-8) registered six strikeouts in his six innings but allowed two runs, six hits and two walks. The 25-year-old right-hander was 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA in his previous eight road starts following back-to-back losses in Atlanta and Pittsburgh on May 1 and 7.

“The harder they hit it at me, the more I like it”, Hernandez said of the balls hit to short. “That’s important — and something that will be key for the other four to look at — how Disco handles himself in those high-leverage, high-pressure situations”. “When you are not scoring many runs, you want to give yourself a chance because you know… runs are going to be tough to come by”.

It was Cincinnati’s 18th consecutive game with a rookie starting pitcher — the longest such streak by any club since September 1997, when St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa used a rookie starter in 19 straight games.

On his recent performances, Greinke said, “This past month I’ve been struggling a little bit to be as good as it was earlier in the year, so I’m just glad to be back pitching good the last couple games”.

Mattingly later said Puig’s dive probably cost the Dodgers a run – Barnhart would have been limited to a single if Puig had kept the ball in front of him – but Greinke defended the right fielder. With Marlon Byrd on first base, Tucker Barnhart hit a sinking line drive to right field.

The Dodgers got the runs back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to Pederson’s 23rd home run of the season.

“I gave it everything I had, and tried mixing it up”.

“Even the two games before that, it was slowly getting worse”, Greinke said. “The ball is coming out of my hand good”. The home run was the second in the last three starts for Greinke, who won a Silver Slugger Award past year. He improved to 8-0 in his last 11 starts while lowering his major league-leading ERA to 1.58.

The Dodgers are 113-54 in 167 combined starts by Greinke and Clayton Kershaw during their three seasons as teammates. Jensen passed Jeff Shaw for second on the Dodgers’ all-time saves list behind Eric Gagne (161).

The Los Angeles right-hander can opt out of his contract after 2015 and chase a lucrative free agent deal.

The reigning NL MVP and Cy Young victor has been a force since, posting a 1.30 ERA in his last 14 starts.
